CONTEXT’s Senthu Premakumar on the Channel’s Insatiable Need for Data

Real-time market intelligence is becoming essential as vendors, distributors, and partners navigate AI, shifting demand, and rising complexity.

The technology channel has always run on information. What’s changing is how quickly that information needs to arrive and how precisely companies need to act on it.

Market volatility, shifting demand, AI adoption, higher component costs, and inventory pressures are creating an environment in which yesterday’s data can quickly become obsolete. Vendors, distributors, and partners can no longer rely solely on quarterly reports, broad market estimates, or sell-in data to understand what’s really happening.

The challenge is visibility. Technology companies need to know what’s actually selling through the channel, not just what vendors are shipping into distribution. They need to see demand at the SKU, price-band, customer-segment, and geographic levels. And, increasingly, they need that information close enough to real time to adjust pricing, promotions, inventory, and investment before market conditions change again.

That need is becoming even more pronounced around AI. Vendors are trying to determine whether customers will actually pay more for AI-enabled PCs and infrastructure, where enterprise AI spending is occurring, and what products and services are attaching to those purchases. The answers matter because the opportunity is shifting away from simply selling increasingly powerful hardware and toward helping customers turn that technology into tangible business value.

The same principle applies to areas beyond AI. Data is most useful when companies stop treating it as a scorecard and start using it as an operational tool. The organizations gaining the greatest value from market intelligence are integrating fresh data into pricing decisions, inventory planning, sales activity, and channel programs rather than waiting until the end of the quarter to explain what already happened.

Yet numbers alone don’t tell the entire story. Transaction data may show what’s happening, but conversations with vendors, distributors, partners, and customers help explain why. In an increasingly data-driven market, the strongest companies will combine both.
