Progress, a Bedford, Massachusetts-based provider of application development and digital experience technologies, has shared the results of its 2018 Data Connectivity Survey, which polled 1,400-plus business and IT professionals about their top-of-mind concerns as they migrate to the cloud.
The Lowdown: Five areas took center stage for the respondents: data integration, real-time hybrid connectivity, data security, open-source analytics, and standards-based technology.
The Details: Some significant findings of the study:
• Data integration: This has become the No. 1 challenge for enterprises embracing cloud computing; almost 50 percent of respondents said an ever-increasing volume of disparate data sources poses a major pain point. More than four out of 10 (44 percent) respondents are concerned about integrating cloud and on-premises data, an indication that real-time hybrid connectivity is critical.
• Data security: An increasing number of vulnerabilities, penalties, and regulations are creating new challenges and opportunities for data integration. More than 65 percent of survey respondents said they must comply with one or more standards.
• Open analytics: More organizations want to query cloud applications with their favorite analytics tool or programming language. On the average, organizations use 2.5 different business intelligence reporting tools, which underscores the need for universal BI connectors.
• Standards-based access: This is growing in popularity as the data source volume rises. More than 50 percent of survey respondents currently use Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) and/or Representational State Transfer (REST), an architectural style for creating networked applications.
The Buzz: “Enterprises are looking to release the power of their data for competitive advantage, while upholding the highest standards for data security,” said John Ainsworth, senior vice president of Core Products at Progress. “Disparate data sources, migration to the cloud, self-service BI demands, and increasing government regulations create challenges for every organization. Progress DataDirect helps customers to overcome these challenges and create the next generation of powerful data solutions and business applications.”
