SecurityEdge offering comes from its partnership with Akamai
Just weeks after announcing partnerships with Akamai Technologies and Fortinet to bolster its cybersecurity capabilities, Comcast Business is coming out with a new cloud-based service for small businesses in partnership with Akamai.
The Lowdown: The Comcast Business SecurityEdge service is designed to reduce the exposure of small businesses to such Internet-related threats as ransomware and other malware, phishing attacks, and botnet infections.
The Details: The new service, announced Monday, is designed to help smaller businesses manage the increasing risk of threats that come with the rapid proliferation of connected devices used not only by employees but also by partners, contractors, and guests. Blocking access to compromised Websites and malicious links, SecurityEdge enables businesses to filter Web content and includes a personalized dashboard to provide regular reporting on what’s happening on a business’ network.
The service also does all this without forcing customers to buy additional hardware. The technology, developed with Akamai, is integrated into existing hardware and automatically covers all devices connected to the network, from smartphones to wireless printers. The solution updates Internet domain threats every 10 minutes, removing the need to download updates from business’ concerns.
The Impact: As business IT environments become more distributed, corporate networks connect to everything from central data centers and the cloud to mobile devices and the network edge. Businesses are turning to service providers like Comcast to put more network security capabilities into their services and remove that burden from them. Small businesses, like larger enterprises, are susceptible to cyberthreats. Insurance company Hisox found that 47% of small businesses were attacked by cybercriminals in 2017.
Background: Earlier this month, Comcast announced that it was partnering with Akamai and Fortinet to integrate their technologies into cloud-based security services for both SMBs and enterprises. The company said it planned to integrate Fortinet’s FortiGate-VM Next-Generation Firewall appliance and Security Fabric into its own ActiveCore software-defined networking (SDN) platform. With Akamai, which is growing its own cloud-based security business, the focus would be on SMBs.
The Buzz: “Cybersecurity keeps business owners up at night because they face an onslaught of challenges, from various, ever-changing forms of cyberthreats that can result in the loss of sensitive information or the disruption of business operations,” said Shena Tharnish, vice president of cybersecurity products for Comcast Business. “Comcast Business SecurityEdge – a simple yet powerful solution – can help defend companies and their data from serious harm by protecting all devices connected to the network at an affordable price.”
