Service provider partners with companies to deliver more security capabilities to enterprises and SMBs
Service provider Comcast Business is partnering with Fortinet and Akamai Technologies to provide cloud-based cybersecurity solutions to enterprises and smaller businesses.
The Lowdown: Comcast Business is aiming to enhance the security capabilities of its product lineup through the alliances by integrating technologies from the new partners.
The Details: The company will integrate Fortinet’s FortiGate-VM Next-Generation Firewall virtual appliance and Security Fabric into Comcast Business’ ActiveCore software-defined networking (SDN) platform. The integration will help enterprises and midsize businesses protect against a range of security threats, such as malware and attacks that target different network capabilities at the same time.
With Akamai and its fast-growing cloud security unit, Comcast Business will develop cloud-based security solutions for small businesses looking for more protection against cyberattacks. The solutions will give SMBs greater visibility into their networks through personalized dashboards and customized reports that detail not only activity on the networks but also threats.
The Impact: In an increasingly distributed IT environment that includes not only multiple public clouds but also the Internet of Things (IoT) and the edge, security becomes a key focus for companies of all sizes that are looking to move more of their business into the cloud to take advantage of such benefits as reduced costs, greater agility and better scaling. Networking becomes the connective tissue in all of this, and organizations are turning to their networking vendors for help. A report by insurance company Hisox last year found that almost half of small businesses in the United States were attacked by cybercriminals.
Background: Comcast Business two years ago partnered with SDN vendor Versa Networks to develop its ActiveCore offering, similar to moves by other service providers to strike up alliances with SDN companies to bring the technology to their fast-evolving networks.
The Buzz: “In today’s hyper-connected world, cyberthreats are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent. No organization is too large or too small to be a target,” said Bob Victor, senior vice president of product management for Comcast Business. “These strategic initiatives will drive increased cybersecurity innovation across our product portfolio, helping customers of all sizes stay protected and secure. We’re thrilled to work with these two industry leaders and look forward to unveiling the output of these relationships in the near future.”
“Organizations undergoing digital innovation need an efficient and advanced security solution designed to protect their WAN edge. We believe the right solution offers deep visibility, robust protection, management simplicity, and optimal performance to mitigate risk, manage operational expense, and improve TCO,” said John Maddison, executive vice president of products and CMO at Fortinet. “We welcome the opportunity to work with Comcast Business to deliver integrated security solutions – to help protect critical data from the network core to the edge.”
“While cybersecurity remains a high priority for most organizations that conduct business online, many SMBs lack the internal resources to address those challenges themselves,” said Dane Walther, senior vice president and general manager for Akamai’s Media and Carrier unit. “We’re excited to partner with Comcast Business in an effort to close that gap and help make cloud-based security services anchored by strong threat intelligence more accessible to a broader range of businesses.”
