It's no surprise, the IT world is becoming increasingly more complex. It's reached a point where government outfits, large enterprises and (especially) managed services providers now deal with so many mixed solutions, it's created  a rat's nest of services and assets. This problem can create a 21st century bottleneck, hampering service and decreasing the quality of IT.

In order to mitigate this evolving issue, HP has unleashed the HP Configuration Management System (CMS) 10, a new platform designed exclusively to automate the discovery of all physical, virtual and cloud projects.

HP boasts that CMS 10, in addition to forming order out of chaos, will actually halve the amount of time spent on manual discovery, while helping users streamline the completion and management of IT projects. CMS 10 has been designed to offload complexity so that organizations can "deliver new services and scale existing ones." Visibility and agility is critical to running a successful IT environment, which is why CMS 10 includes:

  • Hardware and software inventory discovery which will link to "associated dependencies."
  • Revamped GUI with streamlined at-a-glance information
  • HP Universal Configuration Management Database with multi-client environmental support for enhanced automation, scalability and security.
  • Automatic detection and grouping of newly added network technology, across hardware, software and middleware
  • Server compliance thresholds to avoid unexpected downtime

Beyond the basic automation tasks, HP CMS 10 features life cycle management and can tap into the existing management of HP Business Service Management, IT management and HP Universal Configuration Management Database, among others. With this wide range of hooks into other systems, HP is poised to "ensure consistent business services availability" for all those leveraging the platform.

HP CMS 10 isn't a standalone solution, it's part of HP's IT Performance Suite, a solution set designed to continually refine the process of IT automation and asset management for IT operations, including application life cycle management and security intelligence capabilities.

On the surface, this is just another launch of HP-centric software solutions, but dig a little deeper, and it's clear HP is looking to find more inroads into the cloud world, particularly with the managed service provider community. This software suite is designed to capitalize on the influx of 'as-a-service solutions' that are dominating the cloud landscape, and with a bit of luck, HP may entice users and clients alike  to look more closely at HP's expanding portfolio of cloud solutions, energizing a fumbling HP.
